Ok, my CD player randomly stopped working. Radio works fine, but everytime I load a CD I get a couple of clicking sounds and then an error message. I'm not even certain that its spinning the disc correctly.

I've tried a lens cleaner for the CD player but it didn't do squat. Am I SOL?

my girlfriends 98 altima did the same thing....loud clicking noises and wouldn't play a disk. She won't let me replace it. Good news is, it started magically working again after some time.

I personally would just put in an aftermarket deck...they're cheap smile

My '00 factory unit gave it up recently as well, though I wasn't getting any errors - it would just start skipping uncontrollably after about 10-15 minutes. I tried using canned air and also one of those cleaning discs, but to no avail. I went ahead and replaced it with a Sony F5700 (single-DIN).

As I was removing the original SE deck, I realized I never once played a cassette in it. Hehe. At least the new unit plays MP3's, so now my center console is MUCH less crowded. wink

Mine did exactly the same (in a '00)... great radio but no CD action, the screen read error. I asked around for help at the usual car stereo places and but I ended up just putting in a Alpine some-thing-or-other. The old one didn't seem worth the hassel. I still have the old one so if someone knows how to fix it, you can have mine.

Does anyone know if the HU's are interchangeable from year to year, etc?

I'd rather spend $40 on ebay to get a new xterra HU rather than $100 to get an aftermarket brand.

I have a 00, want to replace the factory stereo with one with some more kick. Since the factory stereo is "boxy" does an aftermarket look sloppy in this space? I have the stereo currently with both the cd and tape deck(who still uses a tape deck?)

bonus! Reccomended speakers? something you have gotten sounds good cranking? I hate distortion.

Thanks!
