I want to add a sub in my '02, I already have a descent Pioneer system but would like to have a low profile sub for myself, not for the entire neighborhood. I like the OEM design that kept it low profile so should I just purchase that panel and add my own speaker, or should I design my own or find a third party panel if it exist? and further what type of speaker/amp should I use, does the OEM design house an amp inside of it?

Thanks people.

If you want a low key sub, just buy a 200 watt or so amp with an 8 inch sub. IF you have Pioneer, they sell a 10 inch sub at wal-mart for like 50 bucks, and the head units are only 150 bucks.
I wanted low key but ended up with kicker speakers for my mids with an older (when they were good) rockford fosgate amp pushing those, then two 12" PPI inverted in a 3 1/2' bandpass box. Had to take it out because there was no room to put anything. I now have an 8 inch Kicker that is plenty of bass...actually if you do want to crank it, it can be heard.
With an SUV like an X, it is basically like a rolling sound box. Get a ported or bandpass box so that the sounds can echo through your entire truck.

what I'd like to do is buy a stock sub panel and just add what I can fit in there, could this be done?
and I assume the amp would have to go under a seat???

I'm in the same boat, KF. I want to add an 8 or a 10 in my X. I had two 12s in my Monte, but I want the cargo space of the X, that's why I got it. I have two amps, a PPI-PCX440 and a kenwood KAC-923 to power my whole system. I just checked the parts dept at the local nissan dealership. The cargo area's body moldings are about $100/each, FYI. As for the JL Stealth box, it kicks ass I'm sure, but it's $$$$ and, if you're like me and fold the seats down ALOT, you lose all that cargo room. For me, that's not exceptable

I'm thinking of doing something like that, just not as "flashy". I'm into stealth sound smile

that stealth box makes amazing sounds, you wont beat it in terms of clean sound, cost and "stealthyness..." it is kinda pricey, but you will never want more... i bought cheap before, then i just wanted to upgrade, now i think its better to just buy what makes you happy...

i got a quote on one for 350 if i got the whole install... i dont know the price on it for sure...

cant go wrong with JL...

boognight,

Agreed, JL makes some amazing stuff, but maybe you missed my comment "...but I want the cargo space of the X, that's why I got it.". I don't want a sub box in my cargo area taking up room. The stealth box sits behind the driver side rear seat, and if you're like me and have the seats down more then up, the box is transformed into anything but stealth smile

i had that impression...

i just wanted to through that out there for you to look at...

i have never had good experiences with free air subs, which is what i think you are going to have to do on the side panel...

i am in the same boat, i dont want to take up any space, but i want good sound... i think i am going the direction of just upgrading all the speakers, new deck and maybe an amp..

I added one of these to my factory system (along with speaker upgrades). It's not a powerhouse unit, but it is enough to match the factory system. I never use the back seats, so I put it in the left rear passenger footwell.

I don't plan on doing a free air sub at all. I'm more then likely going to get a 10w3v2 and put it in a sealed fiberglass enclosure. I'll lose the 6x9s, more then likely, but will add in 5.25's at a later date.
