Hey I guys I would like to add lights onto the back of the truck so I can see more when backing up. I have heard stuff about KC's, should I get two of these or only one? Also I do not have a load warrior and I would like to just instal these onto the back horiz. bar but if possible would like to be able to push them down so i can get a kayak off and on without hitting the lights, is this possible? also, I would like these to come on when i go into reverse but also have another switch, where have you guys put this switch (03) and what after market switches are out there? Thanks

i used kc hilights backup light system for mine. i decided i didnt want to use the relay, but instead just have them work off a switch.

i put the switch in one of the blank plates next to the dash dimmer switch.

as far as the switch goes, i went to the local hardware store and got it. i just had them drill a half inch hole in the cover to put the switch through. you just have to pop the dash off to be able to get the cover plate out. and if you need to know how to get the dash off, or get other panels off, just let me know cause i have the service manual and can send a page or two your way.

however, mainly the wiring part,i wanted to do by myself, just to get experience doing stuff like that. it turned out easier than i thought, just took a little while cause i was having different ideas about where to run the wires.

if you want the full thing to be done for you already, where you just have to run wires, check out a coolkit.
they come with everything you need, and you even get to choose the switch and things like that.

other than that, just do some searching, its how i found most of my information. good luck. [ThumbsUp]

i have seen tons of people here in colorado with backup light systems on their roof rack uncovered.

i also have been followed on the road (just normal driving) by cops before, and havent been pulled over for it.

the only law that i know of (at least in colorado) is that you can only have 2 sets of lights on at one time on the road (ie fog, and normal lights).

if i were to turn the rear lights on while driving, it would be very illegal im sure.

In PA the law is AS I RECAL

the lights may be uncovered but MUST be wired in to work ONLY with the reverse lights. And may not be set up with a seperate switch.

At least as far as i recall.

I have my light switches in the middle console, in the two blank spots beside the power outlet. The black caps are just stuck on and pop off easily. Also, my reverse lights are small and square so I mounted them against the tow hitch so they are out of the way and won't get ripped off while off road.

Same law here and I've been checked for it. (it really depends on the mood of the cops) I did install a kill switch which I use during the daytime.

I like the light setup. I will have some "reverse" lights like those to my rig.

For those looking for a good rocker switch: I have been getting ready to throw some lights up top but had been looking all over for a good quality switch that would fit in the knockout shown in the photos above. Couldn't find a good switch at the dealer or auto parts store. Seems Toyota has their fog light rocker switch that would fit but sells for $70.....? Finally ran across a post on the internet suggesting using a switch from a boating supply store. The rocker switch I used is #58328-100BP manufacturer is Cole Hersee and after some very minor trimming popped right into the spot the knockout used to be. The switch was about $12, lighted and looks stock.

WallyWorld $8 each. They only come on when I put it in reverse. Some states it has to be that way!

Just one comment, if you are going to wire them in any way to the stock reverse lights, use a relay.
If you try to tap power for the lights from the reverse light circuit, you might end up causing problems. (I can't remember what blows, but there was something from a direct tap)

I used a U bolt on the roof rack to mount the light. Set of $20 lights from auto zone.

I had rear lights welded onto the back door of my trooper, I plan to do the same thing to the xterra but I really like ramness's setup with the u-bolt.
