The biggest disappointment with my '02 S/C is how it perfoms in the snow. I just got new tires this year, but the truck just seems pretty light compared to my old Cherokee. Anyone have any tips?

I've never had any problems in snow, even with the stock tires.

i know im kinda scared for the snow. i wrecked my first car sliding on ice n snow but it was mostly my fault, wont go into it. i noticed when it gets wet out near my school turn-in my rear end likes to slide out so i can only imagine what will happen when snow falls. hopefully the 4WD will help out.

the X is pretty good in the snow but i really do miss my 94 cherokee. that gear reduction was amazing and it would eat up bad weather and ask for more. the X takes a bit of a soft touch but when used to it wont disappoint.

If you adjust your driving to the road conditions (aka don't do 65 on ice), you shouldn't have any problems, even with stock tires.

Where you at in CO? Speaking of tires...the Rugged Trail BFGs did ok last winter. Went through 2 to 3 ft. of snow, with some steep gravel hills. I'd really like to know what tires are best for that. All Terrain BFGs or something else? Yes I am too lazy to search so bite me if you are going to waste all our time bitching about that tired issue. Thanks. ![[Smoking]](graemlins/smokin.gif)

I was extremely impressed w/ my snow performance last year w/ BFG KOs - much better than I expected w/ year round ATs. What pressure are you running your tires at? A lot of shops seem to think 40+ is a good idea. ![[Freak]](graemlins/freak.gif)

When I bought my X, the sales rep took me to their 'off-site' lot and let me drive around through unplowed snow. I drove it into a snow bank because he told me it would not get stuck. It DID get stuck in 4 hi, so I dropped the x-fer case to low and crawled right out. The sales rep thought he was going to be made to look like an ass. Other than that, I haven't had any REAL experience with snow. I have to take it back to my hometown in western PA where REAL mountains exist. There we have drifts and fun mining roads to play on in the snow. My concern now is with the 1/2 to 1/4 tread left on my stock BFG's. I hope that's enough to get me through this winter.

Never had any problems driving in the snow. I'll be interested to see how the new tires do. Last year I was on Rugged Trails.

It depends on how you drive in the snow. I've had all sorts of vehicles, and had very good luck. Front wheel drive does great in the snow, until the snow is too deep. You have to keep moving. Don't use low range, use high range. Steer into your skids. If your back end starts skidding to the right, turn right into the skid and let off the power some. It should straighten out. Remember, 4x4 gets you going much better than 4x2, but YOU CANNOT STOP ANY BETTER THAN A 4x2. Give yourself plenty of stoppping distance and don't go too fast. I've seen plenty of people in 4x4's stuck in the snow. Most were in low range with there wheels barely moving.

Folks, I live in Newfoundland Canada so there probably aren't too many of you who see snow like we do up here ......I have a 2000 4X4 3.3L auto and I have never been worried about driving in snow, either here or in Nova Scotia. The stock tires are fine as long as you aren't trying to climb a mountain of unplowed snow or ice. :p For everyday driving on roads that are snow covered I find the X great, especially in 4 HI. An upgrade to a better, more aggressive treaded tire is a must though if you plan on doing anyting off of the everyday roads up here in the snow and ice! ![[Too much XOC]](graemlins/dead.gif) .

I can attest to what Jeff is saying. My X spent its first winter in Northern Newfoundland, and it did very good in snow. Even with stock tires. But now that I moved to Ottawa, the wheater is more ice than snow, then it can get slippery. Just remember to adjust you driving to the conditions.

Sand bags over the rear wheels...120-240 lbs depending on the number of passengers. My '01 X used to suck in the snow (yes I had AT's and LSD) before I put the extra weight in the back.

There is already over 2200 lbs on the real axle, what do you think 10% more is going to do?? in a pickup with 700 lbs on the rear axle, 200 lbs does wonders.. but in our trucks?? for the record, you have ~170 lbs difference in fuel in the tank between full & fumes.. tires are far more important then a little ballast.. Skidplates or a rear tire carrier would do the same job, and be useful..

Have your wife sit in the back The X is a capable as any other 4x4 in the snow. tires and the ability to actually drive in slippery conditions are key. Every X-mas I drive 3900km round trip to my in laws with 90% of it being on compact snow and I love driving it, take your time, slow down and you'll be fine
