hello,
i get 270 miles on a tank of gas, sometimes a little more. i run 35psi and it did get a little better when i installed k&n air filter and borla muffler. i'm planning to go to synthetic oil and maybe it will improve mileage a little

I have a '02 4x4 SE with only a K&N drop in, and I get between 220-240 miles before the gas light comes on.

I have been traking my mileage since I got the X and with just the stock air filter my cumulative MPG was 14.05 mpg (4,196 miles).

Then put in a K&N drop in and my current cumulative MPG is 14.51 mpg (18,363 miles). If I take out the first 4,196 miles (stock filter) the mpg is 14.66.

My high was 17.52 mpg and a low of 12.57 mpg.

This past weekend I switched to Mobil One synthetic and waiting to see if it affects my MPG.

When I picked mine up from the dealership last night, I drove just over 300 miles from their door to mine without needing to stop (but the light had just come on).

That is entirely highway, 60 to 75 mph. SC 5 speed with 18,000 miles.

Unfortunately, they filled it before I arrived so I am not sure if they followed the required premium fuel....doubt it though.

WOW...........I have a gas tank which is still crushed into the bottom of the truck & I can only pump about 14 gallons in & I get 248 miles to my damaged tank. Cant wait to fix it & get my 400/425 miles per tank!!!!!

Why would mine differ from all these....I have no mods & I drive like shit all the time (speeding etc)????

my light will generally come on around 255-270, and then I go around 20-25 more miles on the light. does anyone know how much gas is suppose to be left in the tank (gallon wise) when the light comes on?

thanks

Mel

It varies. 1 to 3 gallons. Best method is to hit the gas station right when the light comes on, and subtract the fill up amount from 19.4.

Even that's not 100%, as I saw on here earlier that after one of the XOC'ers ran out of fuel, he didn't even get 18 gallons in his bone dry tank.
He didn't say, but in retrospect, maybe it his tank was dinged up...

I've been following this thread, I wanted to wait and post until I went through a tank. I just installed a Mangnaflow muffler at fill up. My gas mileage went from averaging 255 mpt (15.45 mpg) to 283 mpt (17.15 mpg) not an average (first tank). 60% of my driving is rural, not highway but not stop and go. Almost 2 mpg increase. Granted, this is far from a scientific method. [LOL]

The light came on at 341 miles last weekend from a full tank and it took 17.0 gallons to refill it. That trip was about 95% highway miles. So far my tank has its original shape.

HOW do you guys DO IT???? I have NEVER gotten over 300 miles to a tank. I've even pushed it as long as I could stand, and that was over 95% highway driving. I think that one tank was 290-something and took 18.5 gallons to fill.

Electroken,
What sort of speeds would you say you drive? I'm guessing 65-70 range. It seems like mileage really falls off quick above 70 or so.

My average speed was 70 mph while on the highway. The tires (near dead Long Trails) were at 30 psi, and the lubricants are synthetic everything.

I would have to concur...260-280 is about right. I just got back from Mammoth Ca. and ran will a fully loaded X (1 mtn bike on the interior rack, 2 on a hitch rack, and enough gear for a week in the woods for 3 adults). I drove the truck from about 1200 ft to 87OO at our highest level, combination of 4x4 low and highway driving. The highway tanks were averaging around 265 before the light came on. Drove around 70-75 mph.

On the homefront, I get about 280 combined city/hwy driving. Don't know about your X but the exhaust and intake *seem* to help a little.

I have a 2000 4x4 3.3L, and I have yet to get less then 17mpg.. 310 to 320 miles on a tank, and my record is about 17.5 gallons.. Granted it is bone stock. I commute 45 miles a day to work & back, 8 of that city, the balance highway.. I set the cruse for 65, and try not to hit anything smile !! The only thing of interest is symthetic 5w30 in the motor.. Hopefully changing the tranny, xfer case, and rear diff will help even more..

Yes, I too have found that running into stuff tends to cause bad gas mileage...
