Well, with the hubs locked you can shift at any speed you like.
I keep my hubs locked when there's enough snow on the ground. If it gets to the point where 2wd will start doing 360s, then I go in 4wd.
AWD is nice for sure, but I'm not willing to pay for its complexity.
