After replacing the air filter, (first time, the dealer had done it the past few times)I noticed a gap all the way around. The top cover doesn't close tight against the bottom piece. Used a puraltor filter. Yes I used the right model.

Suppose to be a gap,1/16 of inch maybe, when the clips are locked. Doesn't seem right.

2003 Xterra. Maybe at our next meeting, I can check out someone's X.

Thanks for the info.

doesnt sound right either. Make sure the filter is in the correct orientation and the right (correct) side is up. (if there is a diifference.)

I know with my K&N, I have to wiggle the top around a bit to get it seated correctly. Maybe it just isnt lined up straight?

I noticed the same thing with the K&N drop-in I used to have. Short story, you're ok.

Not as short story, the outside edge of the K&N was thicker. The filter had a tight seal with the bottom airbox and the top airbox fit tight on the filter; since the fiter was thicker the two plastic halves of the box didn't touch but the seal was tight anyway.

My problem was that one of the clips wouldn't stay on with the thicker filter. But after watching it for a few weeks the other clips were keeping the air box sealed, so no worries.

Double check yours to make sure the halves are sealing tight to the filter. If not then you'll need a new one.
