This past weekend an exhaust shop installed a "Wide Open" Magnaflow muffler on my X. All the piping is OEM. . .this was a simple replacement of the OEM can.

Results: Exterior tone is very deep and aggressive. However the interior resonance at 2000RPM - 3000RPM is excessively loud. I was wondering if anyone who had done a custom exhaust had any feedback on what aftermarket muffler offered "low level" interior resonance.

I was originally interested in a Flowmaster 50 series for SUVS that is a 3 chamber muffler advertised as an interally quiet muffler. The muffler shop claimed that the Magnaflow was actually quieter but I noticed that it didn't appear to have any chambers. I might be mistaken but aren't chambers w/in a muffler supposed to cancel out sound waves thus limiting interior/exterior "sound".

Any feedback on a "quieter interior" muffler would be appreciated.

Give it some time to carbon up, the overall sound will change and "smooth" out. like you said you get a real spike in sound at 2500 - 3000 rpm, this go away in about 5000km... or 3000mi. give it time.

The change will not be very drastic, however. If it's too loud inside now, chances are it's not really gonna get much better.

To the original poster, do you know which series Flowmaster you got?

The shop installed a Magnaflow muffler. They claimed that they are "quieter" than Flowmasters. I originally requested a 50 series Flowmaster but decided to go ahead w/ their recommendation. After further research I noticed that Magnaflow mufflers (there is only one "type") are chamberless vs. the 50 series Flowmaster that I believe is 3-chambered. I'm by no means a muffler expert but I thought that a 3 chambered muffler would be quieter both externally/internally than a non-chambered muffler. The shop is willing to exchange the Magnaflow for a Flowmaster, I just want to make sure that I don't end up w/ a deafening interior.

Sorry, I guess I misread your post.

I do remember someone saying that Flowmaster 50 was relatively quiet, and apparently they did not like that. I know for a fact that 40 series flowmaster (original) is louder than the 50.

I have the 40 series original and it's not bad at all. The interior noise is minial and there's not much droning at all.

I would say that going with Flowmaster 50 SUV is a safe bet if you don't want much noise inside.

Not always the case, but usually true, the more chambers means the baffles are wrapped with more insulation than just a single straight through baffle design. But depending on the insulation packing material, a multichambered muffler can be loud as well. But in this case it looks like the Flowmaster50 is the one to go with. post up when you get it swapped, Id like to hear your experience, especially the droning
