Anyone out there own a 2.4L 4 banger?

What does it drive like? Can you pass cars on the freeway OK? Do you feel safe in it.

I still believe that 2.4L is a pretty big engine size if you compare it to cars in Europe and Asia. It's only Americans that think anything less the 5.0L is whimpy!

Just curious how you like your xterras!

Thanks.

I have that same engine in a 4x4 frontier and it's a slug in traffic. I've replaced the exhaust, intake, and will be putting a header on it within the next couple weeks...those things help marginally, but it's still a 4 banger in a heavy truck.

On the other hand, I'm running 33" tires with 5.14 gears. When it was stock and had the little 235/70/15 tires on it, it did OK in traffic.

Moral: Keep it stock and it'll be OK.

I've never driven an X with the 4 cylinder engine in it, though I did have a hardbody that had the KA24, and man, it was slooow.

I dont think I could have tolerated driving it if it wasn't a 5 speed, so I can't imagine how sluggish the X and a couple extra thousand pounds might feel with it (I believe the KA24 was what was used in the X). At least it wasn't offered in a 4 cylinder/automatic combo, that would have been a tragedy.

Anyway, this doesn't really answer the original question, so ignore at will. laugh

The X engine is a KA24DE. The HB engine was a KA24E. The extra cam in the newer motors adds some torque and about 9 more Hp.

Well, I don't think Nissan would allow the 4-banger Xterra on the road if it was so drastically weak that it was dangerous. I'm sure thats why they don't offer the Automatic 4-cylinder.

Isn't there a certain legal requirement for a car to have enough power to survive life on the freeway? If so, does anyone know what the minimum requirements are for HP in cars?

With all the weak hybrids and 3 cylinder Geo Metros out there, it would be cool to see how low auto manufacturers can go with their "budget" cars.

Thanks for the info. An extra 9 HP, that doesnt seem like much frown

I had a Sammy with 31's. The only way I could get over 60 was to tuck in behind a semi and hang on for dear life.

I had an 00 frontier with a 4 banger..automatic.. it hit the limiter at 104 in 3rd gear no problem.. (it's a big desert out here) the secret is of course keep the revs up.. In the case of the X however there is that 1000 lbs eXtra weight and more air drag than the smaller pick up.

This is my first post, but I have been reading the forums since I bought my Xterra in November, I have a 4 banger and love it. I took it on my first road trip last week from Dallas to Springfield, Missouri. I was doing between 75 and 80 most of the way with no problem, as far as quick punch at cruising speed, not so much, it is better off the line. Overall, I'm very pleased with my 4 cyl. Xterra on short trips or long.

X-Tex; what kind of mileage do you get out of your 4 cyl... our V6s are thirsty, I am getting around 17. I am betting you are beating all of us at the gas pump.

With my V6, it's 17 city 19 hwy.

When I say 19 mpg hwy miles I'm not talking about driving around L.A. freeways. That counts as city. I mean driving long distances with no traffic on a road trip.

The term "hwy" should be redefined to "rural" driving.

Ive got a 4 cylinder X,about everything on the road is quicker, but it has alot of torque.I still love the thing though, but if it had an automatic transmission I would probably have lit it on fire by now. [Too much XOC]

Is the 4 cylinder engine really loud? My V6 gets screaming loud past 4K.

I getting in the low 20's, depending on how much around town driving I do, I did notice when I go 70 or higher, it takes a nice dive.
