I have searched but I haven't been able to find a clear way to install shackles. I need to know how to do the whole process of putting shackles on, if anyone has photos or anything thatd be great.

i just did mine and went by those same instructions and everything went smoothly. it does say you should remove the spare completely, but i just lowered it down far enough the get the stock shackle off and the new one on. i didn't even let the spare touch the ground. have fun with the easiest SL there is! took me an hour (w/ beer ) to do shackles and torsion crank.

i am thining about doing a shackle lift but i heard bad things, like it flatens out your leaf springs and then makes your car sag in the back, is that true, cause i like those revovler shackles and i am thinking about getting a pair?

That is a result of wheeling. Most people start to hit the harder trails after the shackle lift. And this causes the springs to wear/sag.

If you get the revolver shackles you MAY need to get new brake lines. The droop on the axle may pull the brake line loose. But again since you are not going for the full 3" suspension lift I am not really sure.

Springs sag sometimes...especially Nissan ones.



Shackles do not make the springs sag...the spring has no way of knowing the length of the shackle...the spring would be in the exact same spot with the exact same loading regardless of the length of the shackle.

People who load up their rigs, spare parts, tools, camping gear, armor, etc...tend to sag their springs faster....because the one thing the springs can tell is how much weight is on them.

But longer shackles will allow for more negative arch in extreme articulation situations (unless extended bumstops are installed). And that advanced negative arching....in addition to the other factors folks have listed here - more aggressive off-roading, bigger spare parts, recovery tools and tools loads, etc.,....may play a part in the advanced wearing of the spring pack, and therefore sagging.

The amount and duration of that negative arch is minimal...I could barely get the spring pack dead flat under full compression...and I have a 2" BL with NO BS extensions...the shackles only add 1.5" to the spring height...its just not that big a deal as compared to the weighty issues....which are 24/7 stressors.

Which is true for spring under applications like the Xterra. A shackle will have less flattening effect on a spring under axle.

However... On a SOA like my Frontier, you can reach a pretty severe negative arch, very easily; even before adding a longer shackle. So the spring packs go flat much faster. Heck, the darn things on my truck start out almost flat...

So in general, yes, shackles do cause leaf packs to flatten out quicker. But on the Xterra, it's not quite as quick as on some other vehicles, since it's spring under.

Well put. My only addition would be to add an "off-road" qualifier. If you put on shackles and never go offroad or put the truck in full compression situations the springs will not flatten any faster at all - they have no idea that the truck is simply sitting 1.5" higher.

That's pretty much it.



If this were a fronty, or CJ spring over, etc., context...then we'd have room to negatively arch more...the X's can shrug it off.



Ever see a spring over CJ get a leaf pack arched up against the frame so you can't pry them down?

Had to leave one in the Pine Barrens once when that happend like 10 years ago.
