FWIW, I just replaced the stock shocks with Bilsteins (at 34,000 miles) and noticed a lot less road vibration coming through the steering wheel.

I can't tell from your post exactly what you're feeling. My steering never felt wander-y or loose. I was just surprised at how much smoother everything felt with the new shocks. Well worth the money, by the way.
