04 X w/ auto tranny

I just noticed car roll backwards uphill in drive if I let go of the brake ( moderate not steep), AFAIK all cars w/ auto tranny I've driven does not have that issue.

I want to know, Does your X do that?

Depends on the angle in my experiences. Yes my X does that, and so did my camry and my civic, all autos.

Was the engine at idle? If it was above stall speed then you have a definite issue. Otherwise, an auto trany will not produce enough torqe at idle. Its like pushing in on the clutch pedal, there isn't anything linking the output to the input so it will roll backwards. Angle of the incline will affect how much rpm you need to overcome this.

Every Automatic I've driven does this and so does my X. It does it if I don't give it enough gas to overcome the curb on my driveway and I "bounce" off it.

My X certainly does not roll backwards up hill when in Drive.

It rolls forwards....

I also have an '04 X with an autobox and the only time I have had it roll backwards uphill is when it is in REVERSE. If the hill is not steep (think about a driveway's grade), it can happen.

If your car does that when it is in drive, then something is wrong (or your explaination is not clear).

My driveway is steep. When I have to stop on it to avoid running through the garage door instead of under it, then my X rolls back a bit when I lift off the brake and move to the gas. Two ways to avoid this:

Don't stop on hills or;
Use your left foot to hold the brake and your right foot to press the gas. Roll on/off of the pedals just like a manual.

Whatever you do, don't use the gas pedal to hold yourself still while facing up an incline. That's what brakes are for. This puts undue stress on the tranny. Every owner's manual I have ever read stressed this practice.

ok, question answered

friend's camry does exactly the same thing as the X.

my old taurus doesn't rollback, it "hangs" there.

Well you live in a plains state, what would you know about hills anyway? Yes, every automatic will roll backwards slightly due to the incline, RPM's and the weight of the vehicle. The X is heavy, at 600 RPM's it is not producing enough torque to overcome it's own weight.

I think you meant to say, 'It rolls backwards DOWNHILL'.

Ah, I may live in a flat, treeless wonder now, but I've lived all but the last three years in Central IL. I know, not much better but it at least had something other than red dust to look at.

Same thing happened to me, i have a steep drive way and it was snowy out and i was in two wheel drive went half way up and then rolled back in drive, i didn't want to stop and put it in reverse cause i was afraid that with the car sliding and stuff that it would strip the transmision. Car appears to be fine but if not, thank god for warranty!!!!! [LOL]

Mine does the same thing at traffic lights on a moderate slope.

It's not the transmission causing this, but the torque converter.

http://auto.howstuffworks.com/torque-converter.htm

A torque converter needs a certain amount of RPM's before enough torque is transfered to cause the vehicle to move. At idle it is possible for the car to roll backwards downhill with the transmission in drive. Be careful though, if enough speed is built up you can stall the engine and then you have no power assist to the brakes or steering.

This is what I thought this subject was about:

In order to try and see if I could get some engine braking when going DOWN steep hills, I once tried stopping at the top of a steep section, putting the automatic transmission in reverse and then coasting down. As mentioned above, after about 20 feet, the engine bucked and then died. Fortunatly I had picked a short downhill section with a run-out. Having no power steering or power brakes is 'interesting'.
