If you look at the bottom most leaf...it looks like a thicker bar, curved down slightly at its tips, not like the flat leaves above that are clamped together at their ends, and attached at their ends to the shackles.

If the leaves above get mashed all the way down...they come to rest on the load leaf.

If you don't have a load leaf, nothing bad happens, unless you over load the rig....and then the butt can get too low:
