Was having issues with my PS2 lately. A while back I had to open it up and adjust the laser. Was fine for a while...haven't played it in months as I have an xbox as well. Got GT4 this week and started playing it....after a couple days it started not reading the CD so I tried to adjust the laser again. Seems as if the issue is that it won;t spin the CD, just turns a few times when put in and then stops. Would the motor to turn the CD or DVD be gone? Any ideas???

I have had the same problems. My PS2 does not read anything, no games, no dvds for quiet sometime. I have yet to adjust anything and will do so soon. It sucks.

i've given up on sony, after ps2 #4 died i've had it. Yes i did mod one but it was working perfectly till the dvd drive died in it too. And since theres been about 12 different versions of the ps2 finding a replacement one for less then a new system was difficult. Funny thing is i bought and xbox at launch and a gamecube also and they are still working great. And i use the xbox a lot!!

I still have my original PS2, I got it in the first batch when they first came out. Haven't had any problems and I play the hell out of it.

I have even brough mine on 2 6 month deployments.

Ditto that. I've had mine for over two years now, pretty consistent use. Sometimes I just leave it on so I don't have to relog into SOCOM when I feel like playing.

Statistically speaking, when one in every 2 households has one, there's gonna be some poor shmoe who ends up with 4 or 5 bum ones in a row.

My ps2 has that exact same problem. I havent tried to fix mine but a friend told me that it has happened to so many people that sony fixes them for free. I dont know where or how to send it in though... (or if sony actually fixes them)

mine wont read the CD rom games anymore. DVD games work just fine tho.

i also still have the original ps2 with no problems...

Sony won't do squat, since the OP stated that he already opened. Once you break the seal sticker in the back, it nulls the warranty and they will not replace anything.

Four years now, and mine is still going strong...if it was one of the original releases, that might be the problem. At a certain point the original PS2 relase started not reading the "gold" discs...only the "blue" discs. They released new firmware a long time ago, but I'm not sure it's still available. I got lucky and waited a couple of years before purchasing mine, and I haven't had a single issue with it....

You can call 1-800-345-SONY and they will fix it for free. You will have to pay to have it shipped to them ($15). I have had to send mine back two or three times, which is a pain, but at least they do it for free. If you have opened the unit by removing or cutting the stickers on the sides then you have vboided your warranty and Sony will probably not fix it. Still worth a try though. My PSP stopped reading UMDs and Sony sent me a brand new one. My old PSP had knicks and scratches all over it and they still sent me a new one.
