I just had mine done. Paid $550 for belt, idler pulley, new water pump and gasket (might as well as long as it is apart)

Can you do it yourself? Yes, if you have the tools (which I do) but didn't want to tackle this. Besides basic tools, you would need at least a 600# impact wrench, timing light a be able to drain the radiator.

I have 117,000 on my X and have no problems at all with it. Do you think that I could let it go on its owen, or do it before that?

Meatheat, we replaced a timing belt and all. I believe xterraparts sells a complete setup for $256.00.

The belt we did was still in good shape visually and seemed fine. The torsioner was worn pretty bad. If it goes than the belt goes and that could damage valves etc.

If you do it I would suggest top and bottom radiator hoses too. If you have tools, time and knowledge it's not that bad (after the first one smile )

PS. are you at Camp LeJeune?

I changed out my timing belt a few weeks ago. I am rather mechanically inclined, have changed other timing belts, rebuilt engines, etc. I can say that this timing belt was a PITA. It was mostly my fault for working in a cramped garage (or as some people call it...car hole) and doing it by myself. It would have helped having another set of hands.

My observations of the belt condition were similar to xterraintx's. The tensioner bearing was in bad shape, and I could feel flat spots when I spun it. The belt was in good condition. If that tensioner siezes up...kiss your timing belt goodbye.

If I had to do it all over again... I would take it to a dealership and pay them to do the work. If you plan on doing it yourself, buy the timing belt kit from xterraparts.com. They have everything in that kit that you should change along with the belt (thermostat, belts, tensioner, spring, etc)

Gone are the days of being blinded by drained coolant. laugh

A list of tools that I need would help. I will look for parts tonight on line.
I'm on New River Air station, by Camp LeJeune. Why?

Meatheat, I am a retired Marine and just figured you may be a Marine.

If you have access to air tools that makes the pulley retainer nut removal easier. The only other thing we needed and did not have the correct size was a 3 jaw puller. Actually bought a harmonic balancer puller at autozone. That said the metric bolts that come with it were the incorrect size. Just bought the correct bolt sizes at Ace.

Also there is another post here with belt tension measurements that we did not have.

A good scraper for cleaning the old gasket off the waterpump will help.

If you do it and want a cell number to call me with questions just let me know.

Like Daggerdoggie, I found a reputable independent shop replace the timing belt, fan belts, water pump and tensioner. Cost me under $500.00. Used genuine parts purchased fomr the dealer.

Recommend to replace all those to save on labor cost.
