Probably need to look at the auto hubs. Is there a clicking sound?

Put it in 4WD and drive in a tight circle. If there is a clicking sound, replace the side that's not clicking. Sounds weird, but the clicking one is the one that's trying to operate. The other one is not.

So, do that and get back with us.

Also, if you can double check and make sure your front drive shaft is turning (I'm betting that it is because your light is on) that would be great.

Actually, the binding is what you're looking for!

If it's binding, then the 4WD is working. If not, then the 4WD isn't working. It will also stress the system, so if it turns on the rack with all the wheels in the air, chances are it will fail when bound. It's a diagnostic procedure, not a daily drive condition.

With it in park, engine off, shifter in 4WD, crawl underneath and turn the front drive shaft by hand, clockwise.

See if it turns. If it does, then the t-case isn't going into 4WD.

If it doesn't, then the t-case is good.

Now, take it out of 4WD, crawl underneath again and turn the front drive shaft clockwise. This time, it will turn, so keep turning it. What you're looking for now is that both hubs are supposed to lock in. At first, one will, then the next. Some times they will go at the same time, but usually it's one then the next.

If you keep turning it, several turns, and neither hub locks in. Then both of your hubs are blown and need replacing. This could be because one locked in, failing to disengage, whatever, and then the other one shelled because it was trying to engage at speed. This has been known to happen, but is not common. So it's kind of the last thing I'd look for.

Good luck, check back with the results.
