Hey guys, somebody posted an amazing step by step photo sequence on changing the timing belt. I was going to down load it but the site went kaput. I have searched high and low for it, but no luck. Is it still somewhere in the archives??

dont know if this link will help you at all but it is a pretty good collection of info with pix. I have done it on mine not too long ago, be ready to set aside a few hours, and bring a case of paitence and maybe a couple of beers.

I know exactly what your talking about - the topic is "Timing belt change ala Dezurtrat." Lucky for us it didn't get lost in the ordeal. If you search for the thread title I think you can still find it. Or if this link works you can get to it from Here I remember I actually printed the thing off and stuck it in my shop book back in '07 prior to undertaking the job myself. Sometimes it's nice to have that frame of reference instead of sitting there wondering -should that look like that? Also if you're interested - there was another good one posted by a guy out in the middle of the pacific that had done it as well, although his was done after the belt had gone and involved a little more work removing the heads and replacing the valves and all. That one as I recall was hosted on the Hawaii club site so it's probably still out there. If I can find the link I'll include it here as well.

Ok, the one that Rich put the link for is the one I was looking for, first off, a bit more info about your X ? year, miles, model.... SC or NA....

Look at the link that Rich posted, if you go down to about the 12th photo, the caption above it starts by saying "New Seal..."
if you look at the right side of that pix, about the middle, you see a short black water hose, "L" shaped, it costs around 10 or 12 bucks , change that while you are in there, before it fails and causes you to have to tear into it all again.... also, I've seen some pix of the lower part that it connects to being rotted out pretty bad. Mine was not showing any signs of rotting out, but better to see it firsthand and be safe rather than sorry later...

also, if you order the kit from xterraparts, which is what I did, made it so quick and easy to get most everything needed, as well as being able to buy that small hose from them as well. also it doesnt come with a gasket for the thermostat, you can get one from most parts store, or just use gasket maker, or whatever you prefer for that.

My X has 118,000 Kilometers (about 65,000 miles), is a 2001 V6 4X4 XE, Runs superb, but I need to change the valve cover gaskets and I have a leak (very minor) from the thermostat inlet manifold, so I intend to do the whole lot, and all those hoses, at the same time.
