My X has been vibrating really bad when I hit about 65mph. The dealer said it was due to my tires being cupped. I went and got all new BFG TA KO's put on. Well the vibrations is still there. I read on XOC that it might be a U-joint. Well I went under the X and the rear U-joint is very loose and is split as you can see in the blurry picture.

I called and ordered 2 U-joints from w ww.4x4parts.com

Can I replace the U-joint myself? If anyone has some advice I would love to hear from you. I really hope this will stop my vibrations. Thanks

Mark M

Yep, it's pretty straightforward if you are mechanically inclined. Just unbolt the ujoint from the rear axle(I'm assuming it's the rear), and alide it out of the tranny.

Make sure you have a socket, slightly smaller than the head of the ujoint. That seems to work well in hammering a u joint though. I would try to describe what to do, but without pictures, it wouldn't make clear sense. Search on the net and I'm sure you'll find something. My first one took 25 minutes. THe time I had to do another on on my Jeep it took 10 because I knew what I was doing. Good luck!

That's also a good time to r&r your rear tranny seal. Don't drop any needle bearings. smile

I'd check out your shocks also. Something cupped those tires. Bad shocks will cause that type of vibration.

I am planning the replace both U-Joints in the rear driveshaft. Does anyone have instructions that clearly show step by step? This is the first time U-joint I have replaced and want to make sure I am doing it right. Since I am getting a set of greaseable U-joints, what type of grease does everyone recomend?

I don't think the tires cupped due to my shocks. I have replaced the stocks with bilsteins about year and a half ago. Thanks agian for all the help. Sure glad I didn't let the dealership talk me into replacing the entire driveshaft. [LOL]

a ball joint press works wonders on U-joints w/o all that pounding.

....looks like a big C-clamp w/ a hole on one side. You can find them for about $50-$75. It's a must for a Jeep owner w/ a Dana 30 front axle...haha.

I may be too late to jump in on this thread. But remember to take a piece of chalk or white marker and mark where the shafts were aligned with each other before you take everything apart. You can have a blance vibration problem if you get everything out of time. Not critical but it can cause a new vibaration.

U joint replacement can be intimidating but really it is pretty easy. Driving the new ones in (or old ones out) with a hammer will work in a pinch, and as long as you dont hit the journals. I have found that a vice is quite helpful and easy to control for pressing new joints into place. Obviously, the jaws need to be able to open wide enough to accomodate not only the joint but also the slightly undersized socket you'll use as a ram. Take your time and you'll get a lot of satisfaction when you're done.

I have a 2001 and have been told I can't replace the u joints but must replace the entire rear axle. non replaceable u joints. is that true?

spicer 1310, one of the more common u-joints around, should cost around $10-$15 per joint, do both while you are there,
