Are you guys not replacing the filter or what? It always takes between 4 and 5 when I change my oil.

Yes, that includes changing the oil filter. See owners manual page 9-2. With oil filter the capacity is 3 1/2 quarts for the V-6 VG33E engine (non supercharged)

It's exactly 3.5 quarts. It's ALWAYS been EXACTLY 3.5 quarts including filter.

Vacs - If you're putting in "4 to 5" you're risking screwing up your motor.

hiyall - Some dealers just say whatever they think will shut you up. I've been amazed at some of the just blatantly wrong things people have been told by dealers and service managers that should know better.

I fill it until it shows full on the dipstick... we are talking about the v6, right?

For the 3.3 L V6 engine..... it is 3.5 quarts of oil (with filter change).

As Kaiser said... "It's ALWAYS been EXACTLY 3.5 quarts including filter."

Here is a snapshot of the Owner's Manual page that deals with this....

NYM, you drive an Xterra? I always thought you just hung out here for the politics. That's crazy.

Next time I change the oil I'll actually pay attention to how much I'm putting in (I'm using oil at the shop which I just pour into a large jug, then into the engine). I know I'm not overfilling, so I must just be mismeasuring/misremembering. crazy

This is exactly why I change my own oil.

It's not hard and I know it's been done right.

I would say dealerships purposely tell you WRONG information. It's called Job Security. LOL

If we do our own repairs/maintenance, and we "F" things up, then we have no choice but to bring the car into the dealer for servicing.
