I have a 2K Xterra and I was wondering if there is a shift on the fly on those models? Usually switching to 4x4, I pull over and shift from a complete stop. I've done it at speeds of 15-25 mph, but results in a loud "Thump!" If anyone can answer this I would greaty apprecite it!

If your hubs are locked you can shift from 4 to 2 or vice versa at any speed.

Do we really need to elaborate here since it's already been mentioned that the 4WD section has it all covered?

I answered his question there's no need to try and make the guy feel like shit for asking a simple question. If you feel like it's a waste of time then don't reply.... ummm cuz that would be wasting your time

If the hubs are unlocked, you can switch into 4wd at up to 25mph, and there will be a thud - pull the lever back quick. If the hubs are locked you can switch into 4wd at any speed, but make sure they are locked before you try it at high speeds. To switch into 4L you should be stopped. Check the 4wd forum for more info. smile

Thud is ok, grinding sounds are what you dont want to hear. Make sure the hubs are locked cause that is a scary sound.

You'll reduce the thud sound if you let off the accellerator first. Reduces the impact on the auto hubs. When in doubt read the manual. OR Search...

I guess my initial response to you should have been "XTerrible, do you really need to even post when i just answered the question and it's already covered in the 4wd section?" Why make someone read through 100 different threads when you can answer his question in 2 seconds? I guess it's more productive to give a smartass comment in that 2 seconds
