A LSD basically adds friction between the right and left tires in a single axle....it is that friction that is trying to limit free wheelspin (thus a LSD). The LSD is always working when ever the tires are turning....if in 4WD or not.
Edit: the LSD works
LESS with no forces applied but the LSD is still working and placing friction within the axle (force that didn't exist before the LSD).
