Off the floor, I'd say the 05 easily.

(There are no 99's, btw)

I am sure the off road capabilities are equal if not superior in the 05. Based on looks, I am a fan of the previous models. Each new look that has come out has gotten 'blockier'. I own the 04 which is more square than the original, however the new 05 is extremely squared off, in the wheelwells and windows.....totally a buyers opinion.

The old models are lighter so for that side the old x has a big advantage the new one its just too big but I still need to test drive it

The 2005 Hands down. It has traction control, and locking rear differential, and 32" tall tires. The old one only had open diffs, and 31" tall tires.

I've only had nothing but good experiences with the new X. Some of the trails I used to run I no longer bottom on. Also I haven't really found a need for the Locker to climb, I've tired it a couple of times, but I didn't need it.

I don't hate the looks of the 2005. It just doesn't look as sporty as the previous generation Xterra. It seems more refined and expensive!

The 1st gen had a decent LSD in the rear. Not exactly a locker unless you stuck some clutch plates in there, but definately better than OPEN.

So are you telling us that you have taken your 05 offroad??? pixs please... still waiting for the 5" lift and 33s before I go get dirty - it just makes working under the truck that much easier if its clean. laugh

Are you sure you're talking about the 1st generation? From my experiences, the LSD sucks major ass. I cant get any assistance from the damn thing no matter what I do.

(i end up using the parking brake in a bind...)

The old models weigh something like 200 lbs less, so the performance difference offroad due to that factor is nil.

To answer your question, the '05 is more capable off the lot.

I took an '05 A/T 4x4 for an all to brief test ride on Saturday. Compared to my '02, there is a lot to like on the new one. Power is one of them; my '02 has a K&N FIPK and Calmini cat-back.....no comparison. The 4 wheel discs are a substantial improvement, etc. The change to a switch activated 4wd doesn't sit well with me. My '02 is paid off and the trade-in value is less than I expected ( I have 29K on the truck). Selling it privately is probably a better way to go. Though it is nice not to have car payments. I will read what you guys (and gals) have to say about your experiences with the new version, then I will decide.

I have a 4X4 2004 X, and prior to that was a 2WD 2002 owner. I checked out the 2005 in February. I really liked the fact that the underside of the 05 is more flush, less hangups and crushing to vital parts. I liked the step in the rear bumper sides, easier for leverage when messin around topside. The rear seats folding down flat was also a plus, along with going carpet free in the cargo area. I was definately not impressed with the closed roof basket. I think it wastes alot of space. I don't know any X owner who only puts a couple of things in that basket, it always gets loaded down. I'd break that lid in a heartbeat. When I sat in the front seat I felt a little claustrophobic. The entire dash seems to invade leg space and I'm only 5'6", I feel sorry for the big guy who might rub his knees up there. Overall I'm not impressed enough to consider changing from 04 to 05. My battle buddy needs me cool

You may say its sucks, but I would give it some credit after doing ALL the goneMoab trails many times over. It isn't a locker, but the LSD in the 01 did not suck a$$ like you mentioned. I have taken it up to the snow, and yes using the parking brake to help engage it, it worked to a certain extent.

Limited Slip Differential...a slight advantage over an open (standard) differential. [Smoking]

Land rovers do quite well with 3 open diffs F/R/Center and electronic traction control... as long as the electronics are working and your brakes are not overheating. These systems have been around for a while and seem to hold up.
Learn to use your e-brake, especially with LSDs. When one wheel has zero traction, an LSD will do little for you. A touch of e-brake will send some torque to the wheel with traction--works even with open diffs.

Well seeing as I own a 4x2 I can't possibly comment on the off road nature of things [Crybaby] but I will say a couple of things about the looks.

Ughhhh. Pwerrt.
I love the specs of the new 05 but it just looks too blah, corporate even. Maybe it doesn't look too bad top down...

Also keep in mind that the LSD was significanly de-fanged starting in '02 (that and the switch away from durasteel sheet metal are the two most significant victims of de-contenting, imo).

Functionally, the 05 wins.

In the looks department, however, it's an abysmal failure.

Looks are totally subjective, and you're opinion on the way it looks is irrelevant to everybody but you.

We have heard this from you at least 10 times...

TremorX = hate 05 X looks.

Now that we have realized this, please don't post this again... and again... and again.

Thanks! wink

Funny thing.....according to the parts counter, anything built in 1999, you have to put the 99 model year in for the parts numbers. The numbers still come up the same as the 00 I think though...

I got the '05 S edition. Yes there are no skid plates however my dealer is putting on the Offroad package skids for no extra charge. As for power it beats my ol 2000 hands down. As for looks, I really don't give a damn what it looks like. It will be dirty most of the time anyway. I haven't had it offroad yet but will as soon as I get the skids on. Yes it has the Long Trails on it but the dealer is also switching those out for the Rugged Trails.

I will let y'all know how it does offroad without the locker or CIB. Of course, I didn't need the locker before and I had an A/T before so there really is not much of a comparison.
