Growing up we took all vacations with 2 of the 6 in our family sitting in the back of a station waggon with no seats or seat belts. My X serves as family truckster, scout troop transport, daily driver, and weekend offroad toy. It stings a little to spend $75 a week in gas when my wife's car uses $30 but I am paying for the flexibility.
Anyone who thinks the Prius or other hybrids are a responsible alternative needs to do a little more research! They do burn less fuel but they have one of the largest environmental footprints of any vehicles on the road.
With information doubling at an unprecidented rate maybe status quo for a few more years is all it will take before we figure out real long term solutions to our energy needs. Knee jerk reactions often pose new and greater unseen problems.
