They were made larger to allow for larger size tires - something that is bitched about on this and other boards constantly.

here's an idea, withold judgement until you actually see the new X - it really doesn't look that bad in person. I can overlook a few cosmetic blemisihes (will be peeling that logo off the bulge first thing tho!) for all the new goodies that are there (factory rear locker - need I say more?!?!)
