Hi all. I am thinking about picking up a used X. It will be 80/20 for on and off road. I do not live too far from Attica Indaina, home of the badlands. I would like to go and play down there. Which Gen would be best? I like the looks of gen 1 but after reading that death vally article An 05 seems pretty good. I didn't want to spend more than $12k. Thanks

Really depends on how much you want to spend on modding it after I guess. Out of the box I'd say a stock 2nd Gen with the locker is more capable than the 1st Gen. But - the 1st Gen is definitely more reliable with regards to not blowing Diffs etc. to easily.

I'd say put $10k into a 2002 / 2003 and spend the extra $2k on some toys for it.

An 05 might not be a good choice. They upgraded the rear differential in 06 which reduced the amount of failures. Unfortunately there are still some in the 06's, but they are less.
