i have a question. i have a new xterra and i love it but it is a 4x2. i might (in the future) need the 4x4. can you convert a 4x2 to a 4x4 and if you did it would save you money on insurance wouldn't it. please be gentile with me i am new to all of this. i just sold my fast and the furious car to get my x, so im just tryin to get up to speed.

thanks in advance for all reply's

i would need the 4x4 for snow and moderate off road.

Congrats on you new X...I really don't know if anybody has converted a 4x2 to 4x4, I'm pretty sure it could be done, but will probably cost you an arm and a leg...the best bet would be to maybe trade it in later on for a 4x4 X, if you really need to use it....

We just covered this a few weeks ago, and the cost would be too high to even consider.

You would need the following:

Transmission
Transfer case
Frame members
Front differential
Front axles
Both drive shafts
Wiring harnesses and dash

Add in probably 50 hours of work or more and you're looking at possibly $10,000 to convert it.

the cost of converting a 2wd to 4wd would cost too much to be practical.
other than trading it in for a 4wd, you can make due with what you've got. get some better tires and sliders/armor and you'll be able to pull off "moderate offroading" as you put it. i'm sure (since this is the 2wd section) there are plenty of 2wd xterras on this board that have personal experience wheeling and can tell you how to get the most out of your front-diff-impaired suv smile .
as for the snow, i don't know, maybe you could just get chains or something.
welcome to the club smile .

Yes. Very easily.

You drive to your nearest Nissan dealership and trade in your 4x2 for a 4x4.

Very easy conversion.

We get snow in Hawaii....only on the Big Island, but yep...you can go up the mountain and ski during the day, and go down to surf same day! [Smoking]
