As a few others have mentioned, there are a lot of fun places to explore in So Cal with a 4x2 truck, especially around San Diego.

Check out Tony Huegel's books (not sure if the name is spelled right, but it's close). He has one called California Coastal Byways, and another for the deserts. The coastal one has a lot of 2WD friendly routes.
