How would you explain Chinatown in San Francisco (it's been around for a long time), or Little Italy in NYC? What about the Polish in Chicago? While they have been diluted of late, these areas kept their foreign identities - through language and festivals and whatnot.

The attitudes of people who were already here is no different than it is now. People don't like the newcomers.

The US doesn't have just one culture. It never did. Language is just one facet of culture.
