Just food for thought......

What do you do for a living and is it what you always wanted to do??? Or is there something else you had your ambitions set on???

Im currently in the Army I really do like it but if I had to do it again the US Coast Guard would have been it. Oh well.

Just interested to see what others think?

I grew up dreaming of keeping a cubicle warm for 8.5 hours a day, five days a week.

Dreams can come true.

I wanted to be a pilot. But my eyes went to crap about the 8th grade or so.

So instead, I design airports.

I'm ok with that! Still get to be on airfields with some regularity, and still get to play with planes; just not in the way I originally planned. But not too bad, either.

x2

And except for the dark office, that's what I do now. Ideally, I'd like to own my own company someday, but who knows. I'm co-founder of a small firm right now, and those after hours phone calls aren't very fun.

I keep a cubicle warm too while I manage a couple multi-million dollar vendor relationships and try to keep all the Dilbert-esque masses happy.

I would have much preferred to stay in Forestry - I worked for the USFS seasonally for 7 years through high school and college.

But...you can't make a good living on seasonal, hourly work.

Then again, I plan to hang up the corporate hat on my 50th birthday and retire to my land 30 miles from the Grand Canyon South Rim where I can hopefully get another one of those seasonal jobs working in the park, or for the Kaibab National Forest nearby. I'm hoping for the good fortune to come full circle like that.

I also dream regularly of being a Powerball jackpot winner.

I'm an in-house attorney for a forest products company. Haven't been here long, but so far I like it a lot. Decent amount of travel around the US, good mix of legal and non-legal work, an interesting industry, and good co-workers. I'm quite satisfied for the time being, though I can't say I necessarily planned to end up in this type of position. If/when I do eventually tire of this, my law degree gives me a lot of alternative options that I can consider, and I'm thankful for that flexibility.

Plus we're saving like demons and are planning on an early retirement (though still a ways out since we're still in our 20s).

from a Military career to a berlin wall that came down (which put an end to my tenure in the Army)

I managed travel agencies for 16 years. I woke up in September and formed my own company where we develop and sell cool shit,

Facial recognition entry system anyone?

I wanted to work for an airline but ended up working for an air cargo company. I was 25, made good money and had a company car but hated my job. So I quit and took a part-time job with a small airline called Muse Air . I made $5.35 an hour (this was 1986) but never loved a job more.

Southwest bought Muse Air and changed the name, and ultimately shut it down in 1987. American hired me and I had a great career there for 14 years. Left for an opportunity that would have been great had it worked out but sadly it didn't.

Delta hired me and I was there for a couple of years before being laid off in late 2004. Now I'm a fire/police/ems dispatcher but I miss the airline industry and know that sooner or later I'll find the right opportunity to go back.

Even if I never do, I can say my dream did come true. I worked with many great people and traveled places I never could have gone otherwise.

I work in the service dept. of a large crane rental company. I handle all the warranty issues for all 26 branches.

I always thought it'd be cool to own a night club thats well known and people would be dying to get into. I too have thought about a burlesque house. There has to be alot of money in that.

Architecture was always my safety net to fall back on. That's what I do now. [Freak] Unrealistically, I want to be a baseball player or play golf on the PGA Tour. Realistically, I would love to design video games, especially sports games. I would also love to work for a professional sports team (doing anything) as well.

I wanted to remain a college student for the rest of my life but after 5 1/2 years I began to feel a bit old looking at the baby faced freshman...so I fell in love, moved in with my future wife and had to get whatever job I could near where we were going to live and ended up yelling at people for Toyota for 8 hours a day telling them that if they didn't make their car payments I'd be sending the Repo man to their house...Now I have an office at a bank where I surf the net all day and occasionally work on writing proposals for multimillion dollar loans for auto dealerships....Not in the least bit fun or interesting...
If I could do what I wanted to now?? Probly move to UT and either work at a National Park or go back to school and learn to be a qualified mechanic...

I broker steel buildings for commercial and residential purposes. More specifically, I sell red iron framing, structural steel, and light gauge to clients who are looking to build just about anything you can imagine.

Honestly I love what I do for a living because I'm fascinated by construction. While this might sound crazy, I also love the challenge of converting someone from a stick built mindset to steel.

Hmm... if I could rewrite my life though and choose another career. I'd like to be an engineer or whatever you'd call someone who makes innovations to home appliances. I'm very intrigued by technology around the home, and I'd like to work for Fridigaire or GE or someone like that. smile

I get to ride a big red fire truck 10 whole days a month and have the other 20 off to do with what I please.

I also wanted to work construction as a kid (like my father) and so I went to college for that. After getting my degree and working as a project manager and estimator for a few years, I tried out the volunteer fire department that I'd wanted to do since a kid. An opportunity came about to go career firefighting and figured I ought to try it while I'm younger than older. There is NO way I could be back to 7-7, 5 days a week! I get way too much time off now.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an astronaut. I ended up working for a software company as one of two online knowledgebase admins. I'm a Jill of all trades--I train, edit, write, mentor, project manage, analyze stats, create graphs. It's something different every day, and I really enjoy it. If I could pick any job right now, I'd want to be in charge of timing stoplights so that when the one you're stopped at turns green, the next one in front of you doesn't immediately turn red.

I wanted to drive a car that weighed like 1000 lbs, with no fenders, no extra seats, and a 1000 HP engine that would do in excess of 200 MPH. That's all I ever really wanted to do...

Currently, I drive a 40 ton, 75 ft. long truck that maxes out at a road scorching 65 MPH after 10 minutes of acceleration. It's hard for me to imagine that there are actually worse jobs out there.

And then people wonder why I carry a rope in the truck...

I'm a professional photographer/videographer. It's what I've always wanted to do. I've been taking photos since I was 8 years old. My dad always had darkroom in every house we lived in and I started developing my own film at 10. I guess I've been lucky to always work in photography in some way all my life. I've been at my current job 14 years. I'm not getting rich by any means but I DO love what I do and to me thats more important. I couldn't imagine getting up everyday to go to a job that I hated.

I wanted to be in communications repair. Cellular, Line of Sight (SHF etc.) Figured I'd work for a cable or phone company some day.

Ended up becoming a Network Engineer/Systems Administrator and I also command and deploy portable satellite communication systems for our (MSHA) Mine Emergency Operations group throughout the US. It's pretty cool, and though most times somber, getting out of the office and actually going on rescue/recovery missions really breaks up the "office" lifestyle Grayham is so fond of. smile

Pays pretty good too...
