From the IRS web site....

...."Economic stimulus payments will be issued according to the last two-digits of the main filer's Social Security number. For joint filers, the payments will go out based on the person listed first on the return."....

It doesn't matter whether or not you got a refund. If you filled out the direct deposit information on your tax form, then you will have it direct deposited.

From irs.gov:

Q. If I'm not expecting a refund, should I still fill out the direct deposit line on my return so I can get my stimulus payment directly deposited?

A. Yes. Even if you aren't due a refund on your tax return, filling out the bank routing information will allow for your stimulus payment to be directly deposited.
For what its worth, I had my refund direct-deposited (filed before Jan 31, even!), and my last two are "14", and I haven't seen the payment yet. frown Sucks because I'm leaving on vacation today and could use the money for some last-minute shopping. I'll be far away from the internet, cell-service, and ATM's where I'm headed so the economic stimulating will have to wait...

I believe this is incorrect. Its not actually a tax rebate at all, but simply a payment from the US Government. The only reason its tied in to the IRS/tax process is because it is based on your level of income, and that is a declaration process that is already being used.[/b]
I wish I could find the source of where I read this, but apparently the stimulus check won't be considered a part of your 2008 taxable income.

That is correct. But it's considered a part of a one-time tax cut from the 2008 tax year.

(You won't get taxed on it.)

Uh, what did you have in mind? You want lookouts posted to monitor for people pilfering from mailboxes? I'm sure they'll get right on it. How about educating people to NOT send cash through the mail?

Buy a mailbox with slot in the front and lock the door closed.

Or have your mail kept at the PO till you go pick it up.

It's not just cash, bills are disappearing also. Basically anything going in or out that might have a check or a social security number in it have been suspect. My wife and I keep mail at the post office and run by to pick it up every two or three days, we pay bills on line and for the one bill we have (the local water bill) that doesn't do online billing, we mail the check from an official "theft proof" U.S. mail box.

One of the things I wish they would allow is my building of a slot in my front door or something like that. They don't. In my neighborhood, there are clusters of boxes along the street that have four or five boxes clumped together. It makes it easier for the postman to drive by and deliver mail. It also makes it incredibly easy for anyone else to drive by and take it. I'd like to see them install lock boxes instead. Cops could do a simple drive by after the mail was delivered once in awhile too.

Picking up our mail at the post office twice a week is a royal pain in the ass.

I suppose I could install one of these, at $150.

Mine ends in 22 as well. I just checked - mine has been deposited. Time to turn it around immediately to the credit card company.

nothing yet for me. We only get $1200 (just barely slipped in for that)...we had 2 dependents but they were 17 and 18 as of 12/30, and to get the kid credit they had to be 16 or younger. Not sure why that makes sense....

I'm a 61, wife is a 56. Nothing yet.

There doesnt seem to be any logic to how they are sending it out. I guess its cause they were 'early'.

I wouldn't use a link from here. Go directly to the IRS website instead.

Could be phishing for social security numbers.
