I just took a look in the ESM for the 2000s. I swear to god I don't see any cats anywhere in the exploded exhaust diagrams except on the 4 cylinder model. It looks like the O2 sensors screw right into what is just a plain old exhaust pipe.

Obviously, we do have cats so I conclude that I am missing something important here.
