Hey guys, I have been trying to research this for a bit now. I am moving soon and I plan on towing my Xterra behind a rental truck. I have reserved a "dollie" trailor and had a important question about this. Do I have to disconnect my drive shaft to tow with the rear wheels on the ground? My X is a 01 SE 4x4 and it does have neutral on the shifter for 2 4H 4L. I am not really a genius on this matter so I would appreciate it deeply if any of you could help me out on this.

I cant be 100% certain, but I know we used to always put 4wd's in Neutral on both the tranny and transfer case to tow 4wd's. not sure about the X's. But of the ones we've had to tow, it wasnt for long trips either, usually bringing them home from breakdowns.

But on the other side, I personally wouldnt recommend towing for long distance like that, but I could be wrong on this. Curious to hear what others have to say on this one myself.

Yeah I also thought about putting both in neutral, but I have heard otherwise. I am driving from Texas to South Carolina so I don't wanna screw it up haha. I looked underneath my X yesterday and it doesn't seem to hard to disconnect the rear shaft.

Well, the last time I moved from NC to CA I just shipped the X because I just didn't want to deal with having a trailor again... but the time before that (NC to CA and back to NC about 11 months later) I did all the same research you are doing and everyone kept telling me that just because you have the X in neutral, there are still moving parts that heat up and your tranny cooler won't be running so while it's ok for short'ish trips, TX to SC is a bit much. The first time I moved U-Haul wouldn't even rent me a dolly because of the weight and the top heavy-ness (word?) of the X. I ended up buying a flatbed car hauler for around $1400.00 new and did it that way, there and back. Was quite the pain and pulls you all over the road. The X is a heavy beast and aerodynamic as a shed... especially when passing or getting passed by big rigs! GEEZ!!! Like I said, this time I shipped the X and the Titan for just over $1300.00 coast to coast. You should be able to find a shipper for about $00 or $500 plus tax (just guessing, maybe cheaper) probably a little more $ than renting the dolly but there is a pain in the ass factor that is worth it's weight in gold.

Hope that helps

Haha that is quite a long trip. I am from Fayetteville, NC and being military I have traveled many trips there. I think I am gonna try towing the X. I am going to see what the rental truck place says of course. I figure I will take the shaft out just in case... hopefully I don't flip! haha.

I think that per Nissan you are suppose to have all the wheels off the ground. But I suspect that disconnecting the drive shaft would work. Even in neutral stuff would still spin.

Unfortunately I found out today that my tires are too big to fit on a trailer at Penske haha. I guess I will have to spend a lil more gas and have my wife drive it.
