Camper towing

Hi all,
I have an 04 SE/SC 4x4. My wife and I are looking at possible camper options that I can safely tow with the XTerra. I want to get tips and thoughts on possible rigs, towing options, etc from other owners as part of my research. At the moment we are looking at the pop-up tent campers but would be curious if anyone is towing a travel trailer.
thx!

I have an 04 manual X. I pull a 1700 lbs pop up. By time you add all the camping gear your looking at 2000 to 2100 lbs. Your X will pull it, but you will feel it behind you every step of the way. Also count on your mileage dropping down to around 8-10 mpg. Your camper will have electric brakes which require your X to be wired for a brake controller mounted inside the cab. Figure 200 for the controller and labor to install. Hitch will run you around 140 new. Anti sway bar will run you another 100. Ball and receiver another 40-60. My pop up is an 04 Fleetwood Cortez. 12' box 17' overall length. Sleeps 6, stove, fridge, furnace and a 10 gallon water tank. If you do buy one, tow with a empty water tank, no need to pull another 80 lbs if you don't need to.

I'm just lucky, although I ordered it that way-- --Mine is 1050 lbs loaded and will go wherever the X will go, my mileage isn't affected untill I start climbing the mountains/freeway, then it drops a little-- -- ![[ThumbsUp]](graemlins/thumbsup.gif) --JIMBO

I believe the max you can tow with an Automatic is 5000 Lbs.

Hi there,
We bought a lightweight travel trailer, a Fun Seeker X, made by Cruiser. It pulls pretty well, weighs about 2900 lbs empty, so we aren't close to the 5,000 lb maximum. We laid out extra bucks for the best anti-sway hitch we could get and that made a huge difference.
I do have one problem though. The signal lights will flash once or twice and stop, so I have to keep turning them on and off manually. Everthing else electrical works. The RV guy who installed it doesn't seem to know what is wrong. Anyone have any suggetions?

I pull a Palomino popup. It's a 14' box. I don't have brakes on it and never felt the need. As mentioned above about the water tank, I took mine out. Storage is a premium in pups and I'd rather a 5 gallon can for drinking water in the back of the X.
If you are buying new, get insurance on it. It's pretty cheap.
You guys should check out the forums over at RV.net. I visit there as much as here. Check out the campcook section. There are some fantastic recipes! The above poster will have his electrical question answered in just minutes.

thx! I have a Starcraft 18RB expandable... it's ALL you want to tow with an X. Keep it under 3500 lbs. and Yes, Tranny Cooler is a necessity!
