It should not wear the paint on the roof rack any more than a Mighty Mount would.
It will hold a tire up to the width of the rack, which is about 34 inches.
The webbing did not bottom out with my 80 lb. toolbox up there, and a tire has a much bigger footprint to spread the weight around.
Shifting of the tire will depend on how well you secure it.
