Question about how suspensions for pitchers work in baseball.

If an positiional (OF/IF) player gets suspended for, say 15 games, he cannot play for 15 games. Now, since SPs only pitch every 5th game or so, is their suspension, in effect, only 3 games? (or is it 'really' 15, as they are not paid for 15 games, but they only do not play 3 due to their rotation position)

confused

I am still not sure if it is days or games that they are suspended. Brian Cashman was asked this question on opening night and he didnt have an answer.

But for the pitcher, I think it would still be 15 games, not 15 starts. He would effectively be out for most of the season if that was the case.

days vs games

I would say games. Reason being is players are paid per game, and they loose pay due to suspensions per game. (Which, I guess, kinda sorta answers my own question. smile )

it's games the team plays weather he pitches or not.

A pitcher makes X # of $ per season not per start. He is paid a monthly salary based on what is annual salary is and he is paid over the number of months (7?) in a season.

If he is hit with a 15 game suspension his pay is docked prorated to the numer days that is extended over. How his starts fall in the roation is irrelevant.

Fro example:

Monthly pay is $200,000 and he is suspended 15 games.
His team plays 15 games over three weeks. He looses 2/3rds of his salary for that month and is left having to survive on a menial $66k and change for the month.

That's at least how I understand it
