Do you really need the big hard drive? Or wireless controllers? Is there something else that comes with the $500 version that makes it worth buying?

Well even if you wanted the HD and 2 wireless controllers that is still only $300 total vs $450 or so.

The hard drive lets you download content. And play original Xbox games. Some of my favorite games are downloaded games from the Xbox live arcade.

Microsoft really does need to offer a larger hard drive

The wireless controllers are really worth it. I went 3rd party for rechargeable battery packs. Actually, the wireless controllers come with holders for regular AA batteries, so if you have rechargeable AA's, your good to go.

Costco has great bundles - cheapest is $490 - it's the PGR one, the only one that was available when I got mine. I would probably splurge for the extra $30 and get the Gears of War version if I were buying one now. Note that the costco bundles include a second controller, a play and charge kit and HD component cables. If you have an HDTV, you need an Xbox. If you don't have an HDTV, it's a good excuse to get one!

You don't have to use the MS HD. I have a USB HD plugged into mine for a storage device. You can pick up a 100mb external USB HD cheap.

I too will be trying for a couple of $100 360's tomorrow. For that price, it's worth buying one for me just in case my 1st one takes a crap. All of my friends have had hardware issues with theirs so far, I'm the only one who hasn't.

Damnit, B...I went there @ 10:59 PST and it loaded in about half a second...tried a refresh @ 11:00 PST and it still hasn't loaded 13 mintues later!
