#628794 - 11/01/07 09:25 AM Bitmap, jpeg, gif conversion question

Hi all. My bud just sent me a pretty funny email that has an embedded image in it that I thought I could post here. It appears to be a gif images (about 2 or 3 frames). When I try right click, save as, the only option is to save it as a bitmap (will save only one frame). With other content, I was giving the option of saving as a gif, but not in this instance. Any suggestions?

Save it as the bmp, then open it in a photo editing software (even the meager MS Paint will do this) and save it as a jpg.

Hawk=thanks. I'm pretty good at PSCS2. I thought that only GIFF's can show multiple images. I tried what you suggested. The jpeg is static. My bud sent my a email titled Saddam's Cat. The image shows a pair of legs hanging and the cat playing with those legs like a cat toy. The embedded image in the email has to have multiple images stacked to show movement. But when I try to save, it will only save one image (the top one). Does this make sense?

Ah...I get it. It's an animated GIF (a series of GIF images). Just save the pic as a GIF, then if/when you post said image on a forum somewhere, it will cycle through the images as you described.

Yeah, what he said. laugh

So basically, your computer won't let you save the animated file as anything other than a bmp file? That's odd. Is there any way you can download the image instead of "right-click & save"? I know Yahoo and Hotmail both have options where you can save the file to your pc. It will save it as the gif file if you use that method...

IE is borked up, seen this many times.

Following the instructions either here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3ben-us%3b810978

or

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q260650/

should fix the problem.

Hey guys, especially Coop-tried the links that you suggested. Made sense. But I am still unable to get the Gif out of the embedded email. I give up. But thanks any how. If any of you want to take a stab at it, you have my email. Just send me a line and I'll foreword the email. I'd like to post it here on the XOC. It's pretty funny.

Can you export the email - as HTML or as something else?

Powerguy38 - that's it. Too funny. Just for fun, I'm going to try to open that email in Front Page. Not sure if that is even possible. But, Powerguy38 - you the one. LOL.

you must be using outlook.

I know how to do this, I just don't remember off the top of my head.

If you still want to know, I can figure it out tomorrow morning.

cruzinfrontier yes-I am using out look. I'm starting to think it is a preference issue. But if you don't mind, sure. Out of every 100 or so cc'd mailings, I get a pretty good pic or joke. This one stood out for some reason.

ok, there is a reason why I never remembered this

  • 1. Make sure you've opened up the mail.
  • 2. Bring up a command shell
  • 3. type cd "%temp%\..\temporary internet files"
  • 4. Look at the folders. Do a cd into the directory with the closest date/time stamp as your time
  • 5. See if there is a gif file in there.
  • 6. copy it away from there using "cp imagetitle.gif (jpg, etc) c:" (for example)
By the way, this only works with the command shell.

edit: fix typo

cruzinfrontier- that did it. Not always messing around wirth command prompts. But you ther one. I had to change the folder though. In the link above, there was a suggestion that the file/folder became corrupted. So the file was moved and name changed. All that for Saddam's dangling legs and his little kitty. Thanks again. Tossed all you guys some trucks. Have a nice weekend.
