Anyone do the belt within the last year or so? Cost? I'm in NJ.
I am getting quotes of 8 hrs, 9 hrs with tensioner. 95 an hour. NOT
I am just looking for the labor hours, not parts. This is for doing it all, cam seals, water pump, belt, thermostat, etc, on a 2001 x.
I did search, most of the posts were from 04-05.
thanks

luckily i haven't had to get mine done yet, but i would think any posts for an '04 should be relevant to your '02

I think I've seen some people quoted at $5-600... IMO anything up to about $800 is reasonable for the whole ball of wax. Any more than that is getting into serious ripoff territory.

Thanks to the knowledge and friends I've picked up on several Nissan boards and clubs (including, obviously, this one) over the past few years I did mine myself last year for a couple hundred bucks cool [ThumbsUp]

ETA: The job will be pretty much identical on any '00-'04 Xterra or Frontier. '05+ Xterras do not have a timing belt, they have a chain - which you don't replace (at least not at 100k miles!)

ETA ETA: WTF is with the extra hour for the tensioner? That's like 15 extra seconds to plop on a new one while everything is apart confused Based on that alone, I'd look elsewhere - they either don't know what they're doing or they're in the back room rolling around on the floor laughing saying "oh - oh - and get this... I'm gonna get another $100 out of him..... for REPlACING THE TENSIONER!!!! [LOL] [LOL] What a TOOL!"

Guess I was ripped off then. Sansone Nissan on Rt. 1 in Woodbridge charged me 1100 bucks for all the belts, thermostat, 4 hoses, water pump, all relevant seals and labor. They were the cheapest by at least 200 dollars compared to ACME Nissan, Somerset Nissan and a few others in the area. Looking at Xterraparts.com, I paid double for the parts. I was never very good at negotiating. frown

i think your first mistake was going to dealers to get quotes. seems like most will rip you off. try to find a good local mechanic next time

When I had mine done at 96,000, I was new to the area and went to a shop that seemed ok. $1300 later, I knew that I'd made a bad choice.

The guy I use now for the bigger items quoted me $700 to do the same job about 3 months ago when we thought my belts were bad - and that pretty much included everything.

Next time, I may try to do it myself. But, since my xterra isn't my DD any longer, it'll probably be a couple of years (or more) before I need to do that work.
