This doesn't show that BlueRay will win the format war, but it is significant that in the week of January 12th, 2007, BlueRay verses HD-DVD total sales since inception, has almost caught up. BlueRay's sales are skyrocketing, outselling HD-DVD since the last week in December, and continuing so much so that for 2007, they're outselling them by almost a 3:1 advantage.
Recent Sales Trend

But, Sony is not doing so hot w/ the PS3 sales right now, even though it appears the current sales are what's boosting the BlueRay movie sales:

PS3 dragging down Sony at the moment

PS3 sales suck because they still don't have any new f#cking games out. All I can find are the launch games. I'm not a big FPS fan when it comes to consoles. I just wish more stuff was out.

Bah, thats like getting a report on how the mac is doing from a microsoft site.

Every time I go to BB every freakin HDDVD is sold out and they have all the blue rays... I dont take any stock in that report since the porn industry exclusively uses HD DVD, there is no possible way that if that report is correct that Blue ray is catching up to the MILLIONS of HDdvds sold by the porn industry monthly. Just like its UMD/minidisc/etc etc, sales will be good for a year or so, then it will just fade away. Bluray is just too slow of a technology... access times are slow, sonys got the market cornered on anything bluray... ie EXPENSIVE. If they were smart theyd learn from beta, take the hit early on and make it cheaper than HD-dvd to ensure its survival. Thats just my opinion though...

Here's two options. 1. Cheap. 2. More Storage

Here's the thing though, both will become cheaper as the technology progress. Also Toshiba is working on a new format of HD-DVD that will compete with blu-ray's storage capacity. Sad thing is, it's NOT backwards compatible. HD-DVD 2.0?

More space is important if you value less compression in your video and sound.

But you may be onto something with the Porn. No doubt they picked the cheapest format possible...

Edit: I still think it's a pretty even competition. And since most people are still happy with DVD's it won't be an overnight win for either format. On paper, I would absolutely choose blu-ray though, but I don't want to buy a player that is better just to have the cheap skates, or porn addicts make my purchase worthless

Agreed, heres a good article too http://news.independent.co.uk/business/analysis_and_features/article2016023.ece

One of the stumbling blocks is too many people associate blu ray with the PS3, after all, sony itself is marketing the PS3 as a "cheap" Bluray player. Which for all intents and purposes, it is. However with all the bad PS3 press, the horrendous load times that the extra capacity of the bluray disc provides... I can see it going badly for sony. Dont forget that almost every technology that failed for sony was technically and schematically superior to its competition
http://aroundcny.com/technofile/texts/howbetadied.htm

Quote:
Beta has at least four solid advantages compared with VHS: The picture is a bit sharper, the tape-winding mechanism can switch quickly from one mode to another, the cassettes are small enough to carry in a coat pocket or purse, and the hi-fi sound tracks don't cause any problems for high-speed duplication.
Now by no means is that a be all end all article, but it does point to the historical fact that superior technologies have fallen by the wayside against cheaper, more mass producible product. Of course, we are comparing apples to oranges with Bluray and beta. Sony needs something to go right for them sometime. Hell betamax gave us vhs, laserdic (flop by phillips) gave us dvds, the minidic could arguably point to mp3 players. Theres just got to be a loser somwhere. im not a betting man by any means, but im leaning more towards HD dvd...

Ahh, you poor misguided HD-DVD lover...
AVN Porn Interview Discredited
Sony doesn\'t care if Porn is on Blue Ray, either
Debbie Does Dallas on Blue Ray (God when will this chick stopping doing everything sight??)

And finally:

Digital Playground, 40% of the Porn Video industry, is going with Blue Ray

So, seriously, have no fear. Your wacking movies will be available on both HD-DVD and Blue-Ray. However, the LARGEST Porn studio is backing Blue-Ray, citing the PS3 as the reason.

[Finger]

(so what was that you were saying about, "no way that report is right"... and other such nonsense?)

I'm still trying to figure out when the "long load times" are going to kick in on my PS3. Load times are less than the PS2 for the couple PS3 games I have. And Blue-Ray movies come up as soon as I put them in, same as a regular DVD did on my Toshiba DVD player. So as much "bad" press Sony has gotten (supposedly), the PS3 still is a pretty damn good machine.

Not to mention, after tonight, I'll linux up and running on it... Sony and Yellow Dog Linux have teamed up, and YDL has put out a FREE version of Linux specifically for the PS3. Suck that Xbox360...

not taking it personally. Just thought it was odd that your reasoning against Blue Ray was your future porn collection...

Ended up not installing it last night; got busy with some other things.

I noticed for the first time that the Skinamax 11:00 movie was in HD. Could have happened before and I just never landed on the channel to realize it - but it's still nice to see. Say what you will about soft core being lame (I'm sure we all prefer hard so lets just avoid that post right now :p ), but a lot of those girls are incredibly hot.

Yep.

HD-DVD players aren't much cheaper than that, either.

Such is the pain of new technology.

Is this porsche's feel-good post trying to make himself feel good about being forced to buy blueray? [Finger] Seriously, give it time. Let's revisit all this next year. We've gone round and round on this before and if it's one thing we've learned... it's and endless battle at this stage in the game and no one knows how all this will play out until they've been out awhile. I imagine by this time next year, we'll all know who the clear-cut winner is.

"forced to buy"??

hardly.

I had my choice. I went w/ the PS3.

If HD-DVD wins out in the future, I'll buy an HD player. To me, a $400 DVD player isn't that big a deal. My first DVD player I ever bought cost more than that; I'm not concerned.

The only reason I posted this, was people were banging on me last Fall when I said the PS3 would help Blu-Ray sales like the PS2 did for DVD sales. And from the way the numbers have shifted into Blu-Ray's favor, I'd say it's coming true.

Then again, the same people that didn't realize the PS2 helped DVD sales are probably the same ones that would deny that the PS3 will help Blue-Ray, even when the #'s are there to support the theory.

But hey, think what you want to, and buy what you want to. HD-DVD puts out a damn good picture, too. I personally think it'll go the way of the Laser Disk, but maybe I'll be wrong, and I'll end up having both a Blue-Ray player (PS3) and an HD-DVD player in the cabinet. I've got the room, now, since I got rid of the PS2 and the DVD player.
