BROOMFIELD - A hungry six-year-old got himself into a jam Tuesday morning when he decided to take his grandmother's car for a drive to Applebee's.

Broomfield Police received the call of a hit and run Tuesday morning and responded to Greenway Drive. When they arrived, they found an abandoned car that had hit a neighborhood power source.

Shortly thereafter a six-year-old came out of the nearby home with his grandmother and police were able to piece together what had happened.

Police say the child decided he wanted to get lunch at Applebee's, and went out the car and moved his child seat from the back of the car to the driver's seat. He then grabbed the keys to the car and started backing up, roughly 47 feet.

He eventually hit a curb before reversing an additional 29 feet, according to police. His mini joyride ended, however, when he hit a power source, causing both the phones and power to go out in the area.

The child went back inside the home to tell his grandmother what had happened and by the time the two stepped outside the police had arrived at the scene.

Xcel estimates roughly 200 people are without power, but they expect power to be restored by Tuesday evening.

It is unknown if any charges will be pressed against the child's grandmother.

Omg, that's ridiculous. I actually read a similar story while at work today. Older kid, more experience, permission from parents FTW.

BOUTTE, La: An 11-year-old boy led police on a chase that reached speeds of more than 100 mph, leading to charges for him and his parents, who are accused of letting him drive for months, state police said.

The boy was driving home to Boutte from a hospital in Kenner, La., after dropping off his disabled father for an appointment. He had been driving his father around for six months, authorities said.

The chase started at 6:30 a.m. Friday on Interstate 310 on the outskirts of New Orleans when a state trooper recorded a sport utility vehicle going 80 mph in a 60-mph zone, Piglia said.

The trooper turned on his lights and siren and tried to stop the driver, but the boy accelerated, passing several other vehicles on the shoulder and forcing cars off the road, according to state police. Finally, the boy turned off the interstate and drove to a Burger King restaurant where his mother worked.

Officials booked the boy, who was not identified because of his age, with felony flight from an officer, reckless driving, speeding, passing on the shoulder, improper lane usage and having no driver's license. The child was released to the custody of an aunt.
