this is an ignorant question, but i honestly do not know the answer...so please feel free to flame after answering

i want to just have a laptop that can connect to the internet remotely, i do not want to keep my desktop. is it possible to connect a router to my cable modem and use the laptop wirelessly or do i still need to retain my desktop and set up a network?
