wife and i went to visit a friend, drink margs and watch football last sat. sat, no crack. sun morning when got back to apartment wife woke up from drive and asked what happened to windshield. what?? using my college education and deductive reasoning i said "$h!t". didn't notice it b/c of the rear view mirror. crack comes down about 4 inches from roof then left about 5 inches. no visible damage from rocks, so think might be from light freeze sat night. no intention on replacing until it crashes in on me. no digi cam or scanner so no pic avail.

Hey Zed...That really bites the big one, man...it could have been a small pin size crack that was unnoticeable, and probably spread like wildfire on a big bump or by offroading...can you report it to your Insurance...

Okay - that was REALLY funny!!! I'm sorry about the windshield, tho. It sucks to either have ot drive with the crack and have it bother you - or pay way too much money for another one that could break again just as easily.

Be aware that there are rules for windshield cracks when getting your annual inspection... if the cracks are too big or obscure the driver's line of sight, they may make you fix it.

You should definitely consider calling one of those places that will come out and drill/glue it to keep it from spreading any more... I think they're pretty reasonable... $40 or so to stop it in its tracks

Your insurance will often do a repair for free, but the repair of a long crack involves drilling along the crack usually, and the simple kits most places have won't cut it... part of the problem is you can't draw a high vacuum if the crack extends past your suction cup...

Supposedly some newer kits are around that address this issue. No idea who uses them (my local Binswanger glass store sure doesent, cause their repair on my truck was crappy.)

luckily the crack is almost obscured by the rearview mirror. that is why i didn't notice it. but, it did grow about another inch after a light freeze the other night. don't plan on replacing until can't pass inspection or it caves in on me.

Screw it, if it's growing that fast, the windshield is too stressed. Replace it when it's gotten annoying enough. I doubt a crack patch will work very well in your case...
