Hi All,

I just bought an 01 SE 4x4 in Boston and drove it across the country. I know Im at 5280 feet and im suppose to lose some power.. but this is rediculous! I floor it and basically go nowhere. I want to get a supercharger for my truck but im t hinking something is up with my catalytic converter.

its awesome to 4 wheel in. Really climbs well... but going up into the mountains is pathetic. im over in the right hand lane with the semis.

is anyone here in denver that can possibly look at my truck or give me some advice? or am i just totally crazy and i bought a truck that just sucks.

i love my xterra and dont want to trade it in and be upside down in my payments.. but the one thing i needed it to do (get me to the ski resorts) it doesnt do! I floor it going up a tiny hill and my boyfriend is embarrased to ride in it with me.

Any ideas anyone????

Alan, aka Cyclemut, would be a good contact.
He's an Xterra specialist at Tynan's in Aurora.
Maybe you need a new air filter, fuel filter, something...

I have the 2001 4x4 SE. And yep, the older X's are prone to slow a little on the hills of I-70 (moreso with the Auto), but it should still get you to the mountains safe, sound and swift.

These guys can help:

First off, remember our hills are much bigger herethan back east. Most heavy V6 SUVs have trouble with those hills.

The first thing you should do is make sure you have a clean air filter.

Use regular (85) gasoline.

Don't attempt to go up hills with your A/C on. It EATS Horsepower.

If all else fails, trade it in for an '05. They have 285 HP right out of the box.

Tell the boyfriend to buy his own vehicle so he doesn't havta complain about yours. laugh

Good luck

Bring it to Allen and have him check for a bad knock sensor on the engine. Mine was bad, and I got more power after it was replaced.

Just get used to the lack of power. If you think yours is bad, try 33" tires and what it does for power loss.

YYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEPPPPPPPPPP!

I have a manual and on a lot of the bigger hills on I-70, I have to shift into fourth and put 'er to the floor prior to starting the climb. That way I can maintain momentum and keep it at around 70 mph. You're screwed if someone pulls out in front of you though. I recently put a cold air intake (Volant) on and it is a noticeable difference in these sections.

Yep Allen is THE X XPERT. Look him up at Tynans on Havana. I just came back from there and as always extremely satisfied.

Dont say it is too far either I just drove 90 miles for his expertise.

Well I imagine Allen can give you a little more power if your knock sensor is bad, but I am sorry to say that even with that it is a dog up in the mountain roads like I-70.

I haven't had it in the mountains yet but I live in Nebraska and with the Ac on, 4 people in the car, and the rear full of lugage the car has no power. I could only imagine in the mountains with a full load, or even just me in the car. I wouldn't read into it to much. But try your regular maintenece items first like the other guys said. plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor, TIMING, air filter, fuel filter etc.

Yeah, and it gets really ruff when you add oversized tires, big heavy bumpers, and camping gear laugh

What Brad said!
I remember when I first moved out here and I didn't think that going to the mountains was that bad, even if I couldn't run up the highway @ 70...then I replaced my front bumper...then I replaced my tires...then I put on the PML...then I replaced my rear bumper...and now it's a dog going up the mountains [LOL]

I love my truck. But I think when I get a raise or a bonus Im going to trade it in for the 2005 beast. That thing is so cool! It looks like a transformer!

Conoco 85 really does help a lot. I havent had time to see Allen b/c I work all week and cant get time off. Does anyone know if he will do special weekend visits? Ill bake him some brownies or something!

Its gotta be my catalytic converter. BC it feels liek the air is trapped. Also, if you look at the CC its black.. really sooty and dirty looking. This could be a sign right? Id love to drive another 2001 4x4 same as mine and see if it is comparable.

Hey does anyone in Denver have a bike rack they are selling? Not ones that go on the top b/c ill forget about it and go under something with low clearance. I want one of those tow ones.

I dont want to pay a fortune either. I dont care if its old.

Im sick of my boyfriends dirty bike in my car.
