I was washing and waxing my X, when I noticed that pieces of paint had peeled of from the inside part of the roof rack. I have never carried anything on the rack.

Has anybody seen this?
Should it be repaired under warranty?

How do you protect the rack? Do you wax it?

Yup, warranty. If the paint peeled off your hood, would you think twice about it?

I would say forget about it. It's a roof rack not a door. Plus it's made of aluminium which won't rust. It's meant to be utilitarian. One day, you will use it and scracth it. Who cares?

I nearly posted the same thing. I'd just as soon strip all the "stuff" off and leave it au natural.

Thanks for the opinions.
I'll check out how it looks and determine what to do in a month or so, when I take the X for service.

i have paint peeling off the steprails (pretty common- same stuff as the roofrack). i unscrewed the plastic 'steps' and man, it is all jacked up under there. paint chipped and missing in huge chunks.

like others said, doesnt matter- its alumimum. someone mentioned a krylon or rustoleum spray paint that was close match...cant remember now. try searching for that thread.

from the looks of the chips, they did not properly prep the aluminum before painting, did not primer or the powdercoat was electrostatically done without primer (not my theory). whatever it is, its obviously not a good bond to the aluminum.

Has anyone removed there roof rack and had it powder coated with a nice thick coat?? I was thinking of doing it since I saw the new 2002 SE X with the darker gunmetal color coating.. It looked like it was coated extra heavy..
Besides I'm kinda tired of that Silver up there I'd like the Dark gunmetal or ??
any pics anyone?? aloha laugh

I posted last week . Dont ever use tape to hold anything on the racks. It takes the paint right off, when you take the tape off
