Can anyone tell me why Nissan decided not to put the step rails on the OR? Are they assuming that most OR buyer do not use the rack and don't need to access it?

Someone will soon post a pick of a crushed step-rail.

Or see www.shrockworks.com for an example.

With the slight bump of any obstacles, whether it be a berm, tree stump, rock, etc... those step rails that are aluminum will bend quickly. It give you that much more clearance and for the real OR enthusiast you end up buying Shrockworks or Calmini sliders to protect your rocker panels.

I thought that might be the case, guys... thanks for clearning it up! As to defibvt's offer - I think I'm going to get a pair 'o sliders and put grip tape on the top. That should do the trick when I want to get the skis or boat off the top.

Just thought I would offer them since they are sitting in my garage collecting dust. I got mudflaps too if anyone wants them.
