I am unable to find a source for high strength (heat-treated?) metric bolts and nuts in Xterra sizes. I've checked with all the auto parts stores in town, Home Depot and Lowe's have no large metric sizes. The closest I've found is Ace Hardware, but those are just normal strength, I'd prefer to get high strength one's for use on my X. The particular application I'm looking for is to attach some homemade rock sliders to the sides. I plan to drill out and retap the existing step rail holes with larger bolts. Any suggestions where I could find these (internet or otherwise)?

whats wrong with the nuts that are welded in your frame?

they are strong enough t hold any rock sliders and are strong enough to take a beating

I forget where, but I've seen pic's of the frame bent where rock sliders were attached using the factory holes. I was even thinking of going as far as welding a reinforcement place to the frame to spread out the load on the frame.

Carver-X,

For metric hardware and lotsa other stuff, I use McMaster-Carr. http://www.mcmaster.com

Another source for only metric items is Metric and Multistandard Components Corp. http://www.metricmcc.com

I've been satisified with both vendors.

dave and Xtoy - and we use stainless whenever we can

Caver-X--you might want to check at a different Lowes, honestly...the one near me stocks metric grade 8.8 and even a few 10.9's in common sizes, which are more than strong enough. If you don't have the local option, though, McMaster-Carr is good stuff, though...just don't get too wrapped up in their catalog, you'll want everything!

That was MR T from MAXC

and trust me the hit was to great , so it would bend everything on its path

and if i am not mistaking frame was not bent, rock sliders were bent

I have seen what hits sliders can take and if you are doing sometihng to bent eather them of mounting hardware, you are doing something very dangerous and you may have much more damage then that

Damn, and I just saw a site within the last days or so that carried all manner of metric and US titanium bolts, nuts and screws...

I'll see if I can find it again.

I might be wrong, but I thought that metric bolts are made only based on sizes and types, but not sizes, types, and strength like standards...

Sure - all bolts come in various tensile strengths. Doesn't matter what size/type they are.

Wow! McMaster-Carr kicks ass! I haven't gotten any work done today, spent my whole morning on their site. Thanks for the help guys! I think I may just stick with the stock size bolts for now, its just as easy to drill them out and enlarge them later if I see the need to do so.
