Has anyone here built their own roof rack? Something similiar to maybe a loadwarrior or safari rack? If so, was there a significant savings in cost? Was it worth the hassle?

Matt Peckman(NEXC) has a complete rack. Give him a shout.
If you're looking for a bolt on type, Tonka_Ross (AZXC)made one. I know he has many bidders already, and was thinking about fabing one himslelf for aftermarket.

Good luck.... guessing you have welding stuff?

I don't have welding equipment, but my father sure does, and I'm thinking it may be cheaper to build one, than buy.

Thanks for clearing that up Todrick. wink Click on the "My Photos" link in my signature line to see what I put together. It's a lot of labor, that's why I'm not building them for others. I love mine and it's very functional, but once my labor is added in it wouldn't be affordable for others. smile

you asked for it.....

Custom built. Not exactly to my specs, but hey, I never paid a dime...

weighs about 60 pounds unladen, bolts to the existing roof rack mounts. I can replace it with the original if I really wanted to but I don't. It's made of stainless, so no painting and no rusting.

Holds a "lower intenstinal by-product" load.

Some detail shots of the quality of it. It's pretty strong. I can sit up there.

I got to hand it to you Matt. That thing is pretty darn huge. Would be great to go camping. I am also impressed at the fact that despite what everyone has said, jokingly or not, you've stuck with it. Way to go!
Oh and King Kobra, you might want to wash that keyboard you've just puked on. Also wash your shirt and pants, I bet you have some residual barf on that as well.

You know Matt, I think your rack is pretty cool! Here's what I would do about the issue up front so that gap doesn't look so obvious (not that it looks THAT bad, but...). I would atleast partially enclose the front area and cut the side panels so they follow the roofline. Then, the frame misfit issue won't be seen...only known by you! smile
