What kind of camera are you using? I notice the banding in the shot (horizontal lines in the sky). I am getting my camera fixed because of it, so I notice stuff like that.
Nice X though...

I would say the banding is due to compression of the image, not the camera. A 600x400 image in true color is 720,000 bytes uncompressed. If the camera is set to its lowest quality (highest compression, smallest file size), you may see banding straight from the camera, but it's extremely rare unless the camera is very low budget.
Software and technique however can do all sorts of things to ruin an image. Gradients, like the sky in that picture, will always cause problems for any compression algorithm and the solution is to always apply a noise filter to the gradient before scaling (resizing) or compressing it.
sb, what camera did you shoot that with, and what software did you edit it with ? Can you link to the original ?

XOC - Mine was a Nikon CoolPix 5400. The banding was confined to the upper left corner of the image. Nikon confirmed a sensor issue at certain settings. Basically I got banding every now and then when 50% of the shot was high brightness and reflection - water, snow - with detail in the upper corner. PITA. It will be fixed, replaced, whatever, but take 4 to 6 weeks. No digi pix this summer. The banding occurred at Fine (Jpeg 1:4 compression) and Hi (Tiff image no compression). Just a fluke shitty part in the camera. The banding appeared on the LCD, with Photoshop and on printed shots. In the shops words, it looked "shitty."
