You want to end up with a total backspacing of 5.25"....
Changing tires won't change anything....the BS remains the same....its all in the rims.
If you have rims with less than 5.25" BS, adding spacers will make it worse, not better, as the more BS, the more tucked into the well, the less BS, the more the tires stick out past the well (Spacers make the tire stick out more, and never bring the tire inboard more)
If you get rims with less than 5.25" of BS, you will get more rubbing, and eventually, can hit the fenders on uptravel, etc...and the wider the tires, the sooner you'll eat the fenders, etc.
I have 33 x12.5's on stock (5.25" BS) rims...no rubbing.
You want 35's....so you also need to sawzall (etc) off the metal parts that will hit on compression/full turn.
If you cut off the fenders, you should be in good shape. (There's stuff in there that you will hit on compression)
If you cut the fenders off so the uptravel is unimpeded, you can use spacers to widen the stance and get some turning radius back, or just get after market rims, they usually have less BS anyway, and the std BS issue has more to do with tucking in...so, nothing to tuck into, no worries mate!
Does that help?
