You may want to check the Tires, Wheels & Brakes section of this forum. Do a search, research what you are looking for - road, trail, rock-crawling, mud. I would assume that you could spend anywhere between $100 and $200+ per tire depending on what you want to spend and what you want to do.
I did some research on this forum and chose to go with the Revos for my 2001 and they are getting installed as I type. Cost was about $120 per tire plus about $55 for shipping from TireRack.com, and I'm having them installed locally for about $50.

i picked up a set of BFG ATs (31x10.50x15) from sears for about $122 ea. they said they wouldnt fit, i said bull shit so i left and came back and had my trailer, told them they were for a chevy pickup cause they asked what they were for. i got em, and took em to a gas station where my best friend works and he changed the oil in my truck while i mounted the tires on the rims. he had to balance them. i put em back on while he pumped the oil back in. i paid $10 for the oil and filter. mount and balance was free. i drove it around for a week and had to take it to a tire shop and paid $20 to re balance the front ones. havent had any trouble since.

I put a set of Michelin LTX on my 2000 Nissan Crew Cab. I think they were probably the same sized tires as the X of that era. Tires were about $122 each also. Bought mine at Sears on sale. They had them cheaper than the local competition at the time.

I have a set of 31x10.5x15 BFG Mud Terrains. They cost me $620 installed(this also covered the discharge fee of the used tires). I have never had a problem with the alignment and balancing of them since the day they were installed over a year ago.

I have 31x10.5x15 Bridgestone Dueler AT REVOs.
$550, installed, balanced. That's before the $75 rebate from Bridgestone (I think that's over now).
